WP1 - Demonstrating innovative treatment processes and reuse scheme operation

Although current technology is capable of reaching the quality requirements of all water reuse regulations, operational and capital costs still remain one of the main barriers that limit the widespread implementation of water reuse schemes. Innovative technologies and treatment schemes must decrease the overall cost of water reuse by increasing performance and adapting the treatment to site and end-use specific conditions.

WP1 Front Although current technology is capable of reaching the quality requirements of all water reuse regulations, operational and capital costs still remain one of the main barriers that limit the widespread implementation of water reuse schemes. Innovative technologies and treatment schemes must decrease the overall cost of water reuse by increasing performance and adapting the treatment to site and end-use specific conditions.

Specific objectives in this work package are:

  • Demonstrate the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of next-generation filtration technologies and schemes.
  • Overcome actual barriers in soil aquifer treatment and demonstrate its technical feasibility as a safe and low cost water reclamation technology with additional environmental benefit (underground storage of water to cope with seasonal variability of water consumption).
  • Demonstrate the safety, robustness and economical advantage of partial disinfection in non sensitive applications.
  • Demonstrate innovative reuse schemes in the agricultural sector that shorten the duration between wastewater generation and application.
  • Demonstrate the feasibility of innovative treatment technologies to extensively close the nutrient cycles and increase the economical and environmental viability of water reuse schemes.
